Instrument Overview

Spec-S5 will consist of a pair of telescopes each with robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrographs capable of simultaneously measuring 12,852 spectra over the wavelength range 360-980 nm. The Spec-S5 project will substantially upgrade the platform that is currently in use by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) on the Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona, to a 6.0-meter primary mirror with 12,852 fiber robots feeding 23 three-channel spectrographs. A duplicate instrument would be constructed on the Mayall's twin telescope, the Blanco at Cerro Tololo, Chile, where the Dark Energy Camera currently operates.
